Evening

The depth of fast-approaching night
Brings darkness to my room,
But, rather than restore the light,
I entertain the gloom

And think about the many times
I’ve tried and tried and failed,
As if committing strings of crimes
For which I’ve now been jailed.

And, even as the stars come out,
I know they’re far away,
Which leaves me not in any doubt
That night outweighs the day.

And each attempt to spread good cheer
Reminds me that you’re nowhere near.
