Understanding

I tried to keep you as a friend,
Which sounds absurd, I know,
But even that’s come to an end,
And so I let you go.

It’s not as if I haven’t got
A place to lay my head,
And, though I might not earn a lot,
At least it keeps me fed.

Yet, when I had you in my life,
It all fell into place;
I wanted you to be my wife,
But that was not the case.

It’s only now you’ve gone for good
That I can say I’ve understood.
