All summer long, my mind, like mud,
Lay dormant in a ditch,
And stagnant water thinned my blood,
A state of being which
Resulted in my dropping out
Of life’s apparent race;
I lost my reason, joy and clout,
And knowing took their place.
The trouble was I made mistakes,
And not just one or two;
I knocked down walls and trod on rakes,
And all because I “knew”.
It’s only now I realise
You must be present to be wise.
