Wistfulness

And, when I look back on my life,
I ask myself what for:
For what the torment and the strife,
The aches and pains galore?

Was stumbling through the briar patch
A thing I had to do
To show my mettle was a match
For what’s both false and true?

Of course, I know the life I’ve led
Is every bit as bright
As that of one around whose head
There shines a ring of light.

It’s just that, when I close my eyes,
I hear my younger version’s cries.
