You ask me how I am, today,
As if you didn’t know,
Since, ever since you went away,
I’ve lost my inner glow.
This life has lost its sacred spark;
The sun has lost its shine;
I sit for ages in the dark
And nurse this heart of mine.
And yet I’m loath to let you see
What you’ve reduced me to:
I feign a look of careless glee
And say, “I’m fine. And you?”
And you reply you’re fine, as well,
Although your life’s one endless hell.
