Throughout my life, I’ve done some things
I had no reason for:
I’ve dried my eyes with onion rings
And sawn holes in my door;
I’ve lain down on a railway track
And slept inside a clock;
And kept the tide from running back
By standing in the dock.
And yet, of all the things I’ve done,
One stands out from the rest:
I tried to win the love of one
I thought the very best.
That all my effort was in vain
Is hardly awkward to explain.
