Yes, I can wear a hat and shirt
As well as anyone.
And yet that doesn’t hide my hurt
Or change a thing I’ve done;
I’m still the same old, sorry me,
More apt to sink than swim,
But those I pass would disagree
And marvel, “Look at him!”
It isn’t that I catch the eye
To make up for some lack;
The clothes I like are simply fly,
And I’m past wearing black.
My resting face is that forlorn
I’m like a one who’s born to mourn.
