Isolation

The cobwebs on your telephone
Say more about your life
Than merely living on your own
Since having left your wife.

You could have journeyed round the sun
On Jupiter or Mars,
Or stopped to have another one
In umpteen downtown bars.

Instead, you chose to cut all ties
With what was going on
Like somebody who ups and dies
And wonders where they’ve gone.

You half-expect the phone to ring,
And yet it’s still as anything.
