Vanguard

No matter what, you’re at the front
Of all that’s gone before,
And, like a farmer on the hunt,
You’re thrilled to find a spoor.

More often, though, than not, it seems
As if the trail’s gone cold,
And so you’re left to think up schemes
To keep from growing old.

But, even then, you’re doing what
No one who’s dead can do –
Attempting to untie the knot
And find the missing clue.

So cut yourself a little slack
And claim the joy of living back.
