Realisation

And, what with all the things that fall apart
And all the ones which wear out bit by bit,
It’s no surprise your spirit gave a start
The second it became clear, This is it.

You walked along and saw the green-gold trees
As if you’d never noticed them before
And, in your pocket, felt the bunch of keys,
The locks of which they’ll fit for evermore.

It didn’t make you sad as once it had
To think your life was on a dead-end street;
You skipped along as happy as a lad
To whom each observation is a treat.

And all the thoughts which fade out one by one
Were not a patch on anything you’d done.
