Attraction

You wonder why your character attracts
Attention from an unattractive one
Who twists the simplest truth, distorts all facts
And ridicules each day beneath the sun.

You think it might be something that you do;
Perhaps, you send a message unawares.
Or, else, they see the past inside of you,
When you were weighted down by sorry cares.

In truth, you needn’t steep yourself in blame;
It’s very plain to see what’s going on:
The whole of humankind desires your flame
And longs to feel its warmth before it’s gone.

Yet you must keep your fire both burning bright
And safe from those who’d like to kill each light.
