Separation

The cupboard where your lover kept her shoes
Is empty as the life she left behind,
And, though you’re happy she was free to choose,
You wish you could have made her change her mind.

You would have sold your soul if she’d required
Or built a house for her in mainland Greece.
In fact, no matter what her heart desired,
You would have striven till you’d brought it peace.

And yet, in spite or, else, because of that,
She dumped you like a piece of outsized junk.
At first, you didn’t know where you were at,
Partaking of her love till you were drunk.

As time passed, though, you finally came to terms
With feeling like the least profound of worms.
