Presence

You used to think you had it all –
The undivided lot! –
And felt yourself to be this tall,
But now you know you’re not.

You’re nothing but a grain of sand,
A single mote of dust…
Yet, though you’ll never take command,
It’s not as if you must:

You’re standing on the borderline
Between the days gone by
And those no person can divine,
No matter how they try.

As such, you’re in the only place
Where there’s no need to state your case.
