And so you’ve been encouraged to embrace
That very thing in life you love the least,
As if, instead of reigning beauty’s face,
You’re meant to look on that of some foul beast.
And yet you’ve tried a hundred thousand times
To inch toward that thing you love so much
But been accused of the most heinous crimes
Although you only risked a single touch.
And so you reach your aching arms around
The dismal darkness at your very core
And make believe you hear a squelching sound,
Which could be fungus, rotten wood or gore.
And yet your error’s very soon laid bare;
It’s not as if there’s really something there.
