I Am
It doesn’t matter if I lose,
or draw or win the game.
It doesn’t change a single thing.
I’m still the very same.
I’m still the person that I was
when I lay in my pram –
the same as I shall always be.
That’s why I say, “I am.”
I’ve been around this great, big world
and seen all kinds of things:
the hovels where the humble house,
the homes of queens and kings,
the caves where once our forebears dwelt,
New York and Amsterdam.
No matter where I found myself,
I still could say, “I am!”
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
I’m longer than the longest day
and older than the night.
I cut the cord when God was born
and said, “Let there be light!”
I watched him make a man of clay
and call on Abraham.
When Pilate jested, “What is truth?”
I heard God say, “I am.”
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
No, it isn’t ego,
I’m talking about,
but this thing called consciousness –
something I can’t live without.
It’s my strength and gets me out
when I’m in a jam.
I don’t need more reason
to maintain, “I am.”
And, when my race is finally run –
the blood cold in my veins –
my body shall return to dust,
but consciousness remains.
What some call spirit, others soul,
still others just a sham
is all I want and ever need.
That’s why I say, “I am.”
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am. I am.
I am. I am. I am.
It doesn’t matter if I care
or couldn’t give a damn.
The only thing which doesn’t change
is the fact I am.
