Stillness

Out of stillness, what appears?
The plaintive wailing of a gnat,
The constant ringing in my ears,
The padding of a tabby cat.

A fresh breath rustles through my nose;
My stomach churns; my temples pound;
And a petal from the reddest rose
Falls and crash-lands on the ground.

And stillness is what humans are;
It’s everybody’s start and end:
Both the light from the farthermost star
And the love that’s shared with the closest friend.

Success is not what’s long been told;
It’s not a question of strong will.
Put all your thoughts and feelings on hold;
All you need do now is be still.
