Solitude

I walk along the shore –
A person who survives
Both tragedy and war,
And that through countless lives.

I feel the peace within,
Though, all around, there’s noise;
But no amount of din
Could kill this joy of joys.

And yet my tranquil state
Has come at quite a cost:
The roads I’ve roamed to date
Are strewn with friends I’ve lost.

I guess I should have known
I’d finish up alone.
