Delayed Gratification

Rejecting what’s within its reach
Is what the mind does well;
It gladly overlooks the beach
To watch the ocean swell.

But putting off its natural state
Is what it does the best;
And so it’s pleased to sit and wait
Before it has a rest.

Whatever makes it happy, though,
Is certain not to last;
It’s only when we know we know
That joy comes thick and fast.

So don’t dismiss what makes you glad
Unless you relish being sad.
