Theatre

The actors dig their toes
Into the stage’s boards
And sniff the paper rose
And brandish wooden swords.

And truth and balderdash
Parade before the eyes
Of those who’ve paid hard cash
To watch them spin their lies.

And, when the curtain falls
On all these bits of fluff,
The circle and the stalls
Can’t clap and cheer enough.

And then they go their way,
Convinced they’ve seen a play.
