Don’t Try

I start a list of things to do;
That’s bound to help me out.
But, when I’m only halfway through,
I’m overcome by doubt.

Attending to the foremost thing
Will take three weeks at least,
But, long before I’ve closed the ring,
My fervour will have ceased.

And then I’ll feel the utmost shame
About what’s left undone
And know exactly who’s to blame
As well as anyone.

So, not to have to say “I tried”,
I shelve the list and go outside.
