If only then had been like now,
What fun we might have had!
We could have sat on freedom’s bough,
Our hearts both pure and glad.
The mountains could have held our smiles,
As we’d gone walking through,
And, though the road had run for miles,
Each inch would have been true.
But, if it hadn’t all gone wrong
And there had been no tears,
I wouldn’t now be half as strong
For having curbed my fears.
So, though I know that now’s not then,
Perhaps we still can love again.
