Maturity

As much as if I’ve come of age,
I break with childish things –
The mild obsession with the stage,
Which soothes both cuts and stings,

The constant fight for elbow room,
The hot pursuit of fun
And all the prophecies of doom,
Which don’t scare anyone.

It isn’t that I’m solemn, though,
Or quick to give a sneer;
It’s just that, everywhere I go,
I find I’m always here.

And, though my body’s caving in,
I’m younger than I’ve ever been.
