An age ago, the night so cold,
I didn’t dare to fall asleep,
For fear a hand would take a hold
And drag me in the frozen deep.
I forced myself to stay awake
By singing all the songs I knew.
And so I felt my body shake
And shivered wildly, all night through.
What I was doing out at all
On such a freezing mountainside,
Try as I might, I can’t recall,
And yet it’s true I almost died.
But, as the light of morning broke,
It shone on one not meant to croak.
