People Pleaser

The mess I make of basic tasks
Should lead me to say no
Whenever an acquaintance asks
If I can cook or sew.

And yet I’m so intent to please
I always answer yes
And burn the cake by five degrees
And denigrate the dress.

The only benefit of this
Is that they don’t ask twice.
And yet there opens an abyss
That fills with snow and ice.

So new acquaintanceships go cold
As did, in days gone by, the old.
