Separation

I’m in a place I came with you
When we were still a pair,
And all was wet with evening dew,
And flies were everywhere.

And fish were jumping all around,
And cattle came to graze.
We knew, though, that our love had drowned
And went our separate ways.

And, through the intervening years,
We’ve met a time or two,
But all is not as it appears,
And none of this is true.

I’m in a place that we both know.
We never came together, though.
