And did you learn to do your duty –
A soldier in the rank and file –
And sacrifice a thing of beauty
For one that’s ugly, base and vile?
Or were you told a different story –
A tale you’ve held on till today –
That, if you crown yourself with glory,
You problems will all fade away?
In truth, your calling doesn’t matter;
That’s not the one you are, as such.
And, if you freeze, flee, fight or flatter,
It changes nothing all that much.
With all the goodness at your core,
You couldn’t want for any more.
