Loss

And what I thought was true romance
The universe had sent
Was nothing but a whim of chance
Which just as quickly went.

And now I’m left to count the cost
Of everything I had
And mourn the loss of all I’ve lost.
No wonder I’m so sad.

And yet I feel such gratitude
For getting such a break –
As if I got to taste the food
Of which the gods partake.

Yet, since that’s what this life’s about,
It makes it hard to go without.
